Year over year, the number of veterans not using VA services continues to decrease while the number of veterans dying by suicide continues to increase.
A recent study by the Wounded Warrior Project and Duke University found that veteran deaths by suicide and self harm are 2.4 times greater than the official estimate.
The reasons include negative prior experiences with the VA, a lack of trust in VA care, the belief that they do not qualify for VA care, excessive wait times, and difficulties navigating services

Founded in 2013, the Veterans Mental Health Council (VMHC) is a Missouri-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering veterans and their families to become confident self-advocates. Through advocacy, education, and peer support, we help veterans navigate mental health care, housing, employment, VA benefits, and substance-use resources while building resilient, veteran-led communities where veterans support veterans. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a trusted organization serving hundreds each year and creating lasting, community-driven change. Our focus is simple:
